How is HIV spread?
by martinez_ohsu (WebMD), 7/16/01 7:41 p.m.
For all of you with questions regarding the spread of HIV. The most common ways in which HIV is spread are: 1. Having vaginal, oral, or anal sex with someone who is HIV infected. 2. Sharing needles or syringes with someone who is infected with HIV. 3. From an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeeding. HIV is NOT spread through everyday social activity. It is not spread through casual contact. This means that activities like hugging, touching, cuddling, kissing and massage do not spread HIV, as long as there is no contact with an infected person's blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk. YOU CANNOT GET HIV FROM: Handshakes, coughs, sneezes, being around an HIV-infected person, food, mosquitoes, swimming pools, toilet seats, phones, computers, straws, spoons, cups, or drinking fountains.
