المصدر بي بي سي Fifa is investigating reports that Bahrain fielded ineligible players during its World Cup Asian round two group A qualifiers.
Bahrain defeated Iran 3-1 on Sunday in their final group match.

The result seemed to dash Iran's hopes of earning automatic qualification for the World Cup finals from the Asian qualifiers.

Iran finished second in the group behind automatic qualifiers Saudi Arabia.

The runners-up from the two Asian groups, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, are scheduled to play a two-leg play-off with the winners then facing the Republic of Ireland home and away for a place in the finals.

However, Iranian press reports have claimed that World Cup preliminary disciplinary regulations called for yellow cards from the first round to be carried over into the second.

Players with two yellow cards receive a one-match suspension.

"Bearing that in mind, the Bahrain national team included ineligible players in four of their last eight group A matches," the report on the Iranian Sports Press website said.

A FIFA spokesman said on Monday the organisation was aware of the reports.

"For the moment we are checking all documents that we have," he said.

"We are also waiting for the referee's report."

Saudi Arabia were celebrating qualification after winning their final Asian Group A match 4-1 against Thailand on Sunday.

Abdullah al-Sheehan opened the scoring for the Saudis, latching on to a through ball from Hussein Abdul Ghani in the 41st minute.

Abdullah al-Jamaan made it 2-0 just after half-time, heading home from an Ahmed al-Dokhi cross.
