Acura will stop building its NSX supercar later this year, but promises to replace it with an all-new high-performance sports car currently under development.

Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Acura luxury division will cease production of its mid-engined NSX later this year, but says a replacement for the supercar is in the works.

The aluminum-intensive 2-seater is ending its 14-year run as one of the world's best-handling sports cars, mainly due to the extensive retooling that would be needed to meet 2006 U.S., European and Asian safety and emissions regulations, Honda says.

“We are committed to having an ultra high-performance vehicle in the Acura lineup in the future,” says John Mendel, senior vice president-automobile operations. “It's too early to comment on specifics, but the all-new model will be just as groundbreaking as the (original) '91 NSX.”

The NSX's handling and drivability have won it numerous accolades from automotive enthusiasts worldwide, and the hand-built supercar is credited as being the first of its kind from Japan, Acura says.

Due to exorbitant development costs of its high-reving V-6 engine and all-aluminum body, chassis and suspension, the NSX always has been priced near $90,000. Cumulative worldwide sales of the NSX total only about 18,000 units, with 8,854 of the cars delivered in the U.S.
