The Project 1221 team behind the mysterious MF1 supercar has revealed its car's unique selling point: it will feature a gas turbine engine, easily enabling it to meet the promised 1221bhp-plus power output. The Project 1221 founder has revealed at the Paris Air Show that the car would use a Williams International-supplied engine, similar to those used in commercial jets.
Gas turbine technology in cars is nothing new; a number of companies - including Rover - built experimental gas turbine cars between the late 1950s and 1970s. However, the MF1 would be the first commercially-available production gas turbine car, albeit a very rare and expensive one; prices start from 675,000 euros and a production run of just 199 vehicles has been decided.
Project 1221 explains that "the adoption of a gas turbine engine imparts a unique personality. To the outside world the rumble of a conventional reciprocating engine, as more or less emitted by all cars, is instead substituted by the characteristic whir that is associated only with air travel. At the same time, the absence of mechanical noise or vibration in the passenger compartment is surprisingly combined with fierce, effortless performance on demand, never before experienced in a road car. In essence, all the planned Project 1221 supercars will provide the private-jet experience on four wheels, this becoming the supreme transport devices on land". Yes, you read that right: Project 1221 plans ultimately to offer an extensive range of gas turbine-propelled supercars.
The original MF1 concept project - with conventional V12 petrol engine and selectable right/left-hand drive thanks to by-wire electronic technology - will continue, however, with the RWD car developing as a road-legal racer distinct from the ultra-high-spec AWD versions, available with optional armoured bodywork. A pure racing model is also under consideration, if the concept can be made to meet FIA regulations. Plans are also underway for a land speed record attempt and entries in both the Dakar Rally and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Orders are said to have been taken, and chassis numbers have been allocated to some of the world's wealthy auto-enthusiasts, keen to get hold of something that really is very different to anything else on offer, even though they will not yet have been able to see even a drawing of the finished product.
