General Motors has been moving fast to sell assets and raise money for its ongoing restructuring program. It had previously raised about $2.7 billion by selling its stakes in Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and Suzuki Motor Corp., and is now in talks to sell its 7.9 percent Isuzu holding, a stake valued at about $322 million, The Detroit News reported.
GM has reportedly discussed the Isuzu deal with three Japanese companies, Mitsubishi Corp., Itochu Corp. and Mizuho Corporate Bank Ltd., and they are still considering the offer, according to spokesmen from the three companies.
GM said in a statement "that it is discussing the possible sale of Isuzu [but it does] not expect any sale of its Isuzu shares to have any effect on this important strategic alliance."
As part of a restructuring of its money-losing North American auto business, GM also plans to cut 30,000 factory jobs and close or downsize about 12 facilities by 2008, as well as reduce health care costs.
