Sami stalemate thwarts Reds - 5/4/2000
Forest have conceded defeat in their battle to gain clearance from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to play trialist Sami Al-Jaber in tonight's reserve game at Crystal Palace.
Al-Jaber is scheduled to fly back to the Middle East tomorrow without having appeared in a Forest shirt!
The 27 year old striker linked-up with Forest last Thursday. Since then, The Reds have been striving to secure the necessary paperwork from the Saudi authorities which would have allowed him to play.
They encountered no problems with his club, Riyadh-based Al Helal Sports Club, but got little joy out of the Saudi Federation.
It's a bitter blow to both the club and player, who is keen to try and forge a career for himself in Europe.
Al-Jaber, who is one of the hottest properties in Middle Eastern football with 33 goals to his credit from 93 4international appearances, had looked impressive in training despite the wet and cold conditions.
David Platt was keen to run the rule over Al-Jaber in the reserve game against Palace and that's now out of the question, Forest intend to continue following his progress in Saudi.
Forest Squad: Crossley,Louis-Jean, Terry, Edwards, Brennan, Gray, Quashie, Cooper, Woan, Freedman, Freeman, Merino, McNamara, Doig, Kearney
KO 7:30pm at The National Sports Centre Crystal Palace
