America's NHTSA (National Highway Transport Safety Administration) has issued its latest recalls bulletin. It includes a number of models also sold in Europe, and two separate recalls for the Land Rover Discovery.
Jaguar S-Type, XK and XJ (January 2002-June 2004) for reprogramming of automatic gearbox control module, following
reports of incorrect selection of reverse gear.
Land Rover Discovery (May 1998-December 2003), for potential cracking of the ABS modulator valve cover retaining bolts; this could increase stopping distances and affect brake
function
.
Land Rover Discovery (June 2000-June 2003), for potential leakage of fluid in the Active Cornering Enhancement pump, which could ignite.
Maserati Coupe and Spyder (September 2001-November 2003), for possible disconnection of the fuel hoses and potential fuel leakage and ignition.
Audi TT 3.2 V6 (July-October 2003, models with DSG transmission), for faulty welding of a seam in the clutch which could cause sudden transmission failure.
Volvo S60, S80 and V70 (March-October 2003), for faulty steering front control arms, which could cause play in the steering wheel, less responsive steering and loss of control.
Dodge Durango 2004 models with 3.7-litre and 4.7-litre engines, for a potentially sticking throttle.
Chrysler 300M, Cirrus, Concorde, LHS and Sebring Convertible models, Dodge Intrepid and Stratus, Eagle Vision and Plymouth Breeze made between April 1992-July 1999, for faulty ignition locking system in automatic gearbox.
Saturn Ion (June 2002-September 2003), for potentially corroding fuel filter (2.2-litre engines) and electric windows/sunroof which could be operated with ignition off.
Owners of all the vehicles concerned should contact their relevant customer services department for further details. An investigation has also been launched into the 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, after the NHTSA received seven separate reports of engine fires. Earlier PT Cruiser models were recalled for leaking fuel pumps in 2002, but it is not yet known if the problems with the newer cars are related to this issue. A recall may follow.
Meanwhile, another investigation is underway after a man lost control of his 1996 Chrysler Sebring, ploughing into a marching band and a crowd of spectators on a St Patrick's Day parade in Savannah, Georgia. Nine people were injured. The Sebring was recalled in 2002 for a potential problem with a sticking throttle; the man's car was said to have undergone remedial work but the vehicle will be inspected.
