Sami’s hopes dashed - 30/3/2000

Trialist Sami Abdullah Al-Jaber’s hopes of lining-up in tonight’s reserve encounter with Coventry at The City Ground have been dashed.
Forest failed to receive clearance from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation in time for Al-Jaber to figure.

The Reds now hope to include the 27 year old Saudi international striker in their reserve line-up to face Crystal Palace next Wednesday.

Al-Jaber, meanwhile, arrived in England yesterday evening and launched his week’s trial with Forest by training with Jimmy Gillingan’s reserve squad this morning.

He’s one of the hottest properties in Arabic football after scoring 33 goals in 93 appearances for his country and is keen to try and make his mark in Europe.

The hoped for appearance of Sami Abdullah Al-Jaber was postponed because by the time the International clearance came in from Saudi Arabia for him to play, everyone from the FA had gone home for the day! We will have to wait until next week 5th April v Crystal Palace Res at the National Sports Centre (7:30pm k.o) to see him in action. Would this be the longest name to go on any shirt?

The reserve side now is looking more like the youth team and that at least makes watching these games interesting seeing the development of the young players through the season.

This was the third game in a week for the reserves and it had the feel of ‘getting games played’, rather than it being entertainment. The first half was only notable by Barry Roche being booked for doing a ‘Beasant’ and going into no mans land to bring down Pead and earning the only booking of the night. Roche tonight does look like a good shot stopper and made some excellent saves, but this tendency to wander around the pitch can be rather worrying.

On 52 mins the Forest defence got into a muddle to let in Runar Normann to slot the ball past Roche, this was after Edds had cleared off the line in an earlier attack.

Coventry were now putting pressure on the Forest defence, when Christian Edwards, with no one around him, took too long to clear the ball and McPhee nipped in, took the ball off him and put the ball past Roche. With Hudson and Gill both coming on for Allou and McNamara, Forest went into their best period. Gray missed a good chance on a one to one with Hyldgaard, but with Merino gliding down the right wing, he put in a beautiful cross straight on to the incoming Gill’s head to head home from close in. Freeman and Gill linked up well to create a good chance, which went wide. Freedman and Freeman then in the closing minutes both missed an opportunity to bring the scores level.

For the last 20 mins Forest looked strong going forward, but like their First team counterparts, lacked that ‘killer’ touch
